How to Clean and Maintain Electroplated Metal Seat Belt Extenders

A clean extender is still not appropriate in a seating position holding a child seat or booster. Child restraints are designed around a specific belt path, or around the vehicle's lower anchors and tether, and an extender changes that path. How often does it need cleaning? A dry wipe whenever you notice fingerprints or dust, and a damp clean when something has spilled on it. There is no schedule worth keeping beyond that, though winter warrants more frequent wipes because of road salt.
Can I use the same product I use on my wheels or exhaust tips? No. Wheel and exhaust products are formulated for heavy soiling and often contain abrasives or aggressive chemistry. A plated interior part needs the mildest thing that works.
